Surfrider Foundation Revitalizes Aloha Gardens

Today, Saturday, May 14th, 2016, the Surfrider Foundation Revitalizes Aloha Gardens at Northside Park.  If you have never been to Northside Park in Ocean City MD [Map], first of all you’re missing a great place to take a walk, ride bikes, roller skate, play catch, workout at the outdoor gym, and I could go on, it’s a great place!

Above is a picture of what this, one of two, gardens looked like, below is how overgrown it had gotten after who knows how long of neglect, below right is Jeff, of the Ocean City Recreation & Parks department, who really dug in and got things ready for us and then continued to help all through putting the Aloha Garden together…

The Ocean City Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our oceans, waves, and beaches through a powerful activist network.

Ocean City Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation was established in June of 1999, it is made up of surfers and non-surfers who care about our beaches and oceans and work to ensure that they are clean and accessible for all to enjoy.  The powerful activist network mentioned above means you and me.

Today some of these activists gathered to pitch in…

Today, one of the many projects the Surfrider Foundation works on around Ocean City, was the planting of an ‘Ocean Friendly Garden’…

Ocean Friendly Gardens (OFG) revive our under-hydrated watersheds and polluted oceans by applying CPR – Conservation, Permeability and Retention – to our landscapes and hardscapes:

  • C – Conserve water and wildlife habitat with native or climate appropriate plants.
  • P – Permeable, living soil and hard surfaces that runoff to landscapes to filter pollutants, sponge up water for plants to tap into during dry months, and absorb carbon dioxide from the atmostphere.
  • R – Retain rain as the first source of irrigation.

The plants we received were from Environmental Concerns, 201 Boundary Ln, St Michaels, MD 21663, Ph: 410.745.9620 | Facebook

Environmental Concern is dedicated to promoting public awareness and stewardship of wetlands with the goal of improving water quality and enhancing nature’s habitats. This is accomplished through public outreach and education, native species horticulture and construction, enhancement and restoration of wetlands.

Environmental Concern’s President, Suzanne Pittenger-Slear was chosen as the 2012 Business Woman of the Year by the Talbot County Chamber of Commerce.

Thanks to everyone that came out today, and to Craig Sibal for all his hard work coordinating the plants, mulch and working with Jeff & the OC Recs & Parks Dept. so that the Aloha Gardens could once again be enjoyed by so many who visit Northside Park…
